Local Charity for March 26-31: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Gateway Chapter)

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. More than 30,000 people are living in the US with the disease, half of which are over the age of 18.

CF is a complex disease and the types and severity of symptoms can differ widely from person to person. Many different factors, such as age of diagnosis, can affect an individual’s health and course of the disease. When a group of parents started the organization in 1955 their hope was to advance understanding of the little-known disease and to create treatments and specialized care for their children; at the time, people born with the disease weren’t expected to live to attend elementary school. Today, because of our efforts, people with CF are living into their 30’s, 40’s, and beyond.

The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research, and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high quality, specialized care.
