14 Jan Local Charity for Jan. 15 -20: Kindness for Colton
Kindness for Colton is a non-profit organization founded in September 2015 with a mission to provide funds for families with children who have severe, multiple, or unique medical needs.
Founded in memory of Colton Voelkerding, Kindness for Colton works to serve children and families with items such as service and support dogs, wheelchair accessible vehicles, medical and funeral expenses, specialized equipment and accessories, construction costs for accessible ramps, and more.
Colton was born on December 12, 2012 and spent 6 months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a wide range of medical needs. Diagnosed with a rare brain malformation, he had multiple seizures per day, some that would pause his breathing and occasionally stop his heart from beating. He persevered through these episodes and inspired all those around him, finally able to come home on June 6, 2013. Unfortunately, Colton passed away on December 7, 2013 due to his medical condition, and we laid him to rest on his first birthday.
Every day with Colton was a lesson in courage and inspiration, and he was not even able to walk or talk. We have been blessed in so many ways because he was a part of our lives. We have been called to care for those around us and, with kindness, to give back to families like us with babies like Colton.
Kindness for Colton hosts two annual fundraisers, a trivia night in the winter and a golf tournament in the summer. These fundraisers are run 100% by volunteers and all auction items are donated goods and services.
